A Subaru engine rebuild is not one job. It is about thirty small jobs that all have to be right, and any one of them done carelessly will show up as a knock, a leak or a coolant smell eighteen months later.
That is why we do the whole thing ourselves. Our Kent shop machines the block and heads, assembles the engine, and puts it back in the car. Same building, same crew, start to finish.
Short Block, Long Block, or Something Else Entirely
People call asking for "a rebuild" and mean three different things. Worth sorting out early, because the price gap is large.
A short block rebuild covers the bottom end. Block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, bearings. Your existing heads go back on.
A long block rebuild adds the cylinder head or heads and the valve train. This is the usual answer when a head gasket has been leaking long enough to cook the heads.
Then there are the builds that start from a conversation about power goals. Forged internals, upgraded components, stock to stroker. We build those too, and we will tell you plainly which parts are worth the money for how you actually drive.
We also install remanufactured Subaru engines when a rebuild does not pencil out. Sometimes that is the smarter call and we would rather say so than talk you into the bigger invoice.

So who actually does the machining when a shop advertises engine rebuilds?

We will not put a single number on this page, because a real rebuild price depends on what we find once the engine is apart. Any shop quoting a firm rebuild figure over the phone is guessing, and the guess usually gets revised upward later.
What actually moves the number:
- Short block versus long block. Adding heads and valve train is a meaningful jump.
- What the machining turns up. A crank that needs grinding, a block that needs boring, heads that need seats cut. Each is real time on real equipment.
- Damage beyond the engine. A serious overheat can take the radiator and hoses with it.
- Stock versus high-performance. Forged internals and tighter clearances cost more in parts and in assembly time.
- Parts choice. We favor genuine Subaru OEM over low cost knock-offs. It costs more today and less across the life of the engine.

Is rebuilding my Subaru engine worth it, or should I replace it?
Depends on the rest of the car. If the body, transmission and interior are sound, a rebuild on a Subaru you know beats an unknown used engine. If the car has other major problems, we will say that too. We also install remanufactured Subaru engines when that is the better value.
How long does a Subaru engine rebuild take?
We give a timeline after teardown and measurement, because that is the first point where the answer is real. Machining in house at our Kent shop removes the shipping and the second queue that stretch most rebuild timelines.
Do you rebuild engines I removed myself?
Yes. We regularly work on customer-removed engines, and we will let you do your own installation on a rebuilt engine if that is your plan.
Can you build my Subaru engine for more power?
We can. Forged builds, upgraded internals, stroker setups and turbo upgrades are all things we do. We will talk through your power goals first and there is no pressure to buy upgrades you do not need.
What parts do you use in a rebuild?
Genuine Subaru OEM parts where quality matters, plus high quality aftermarket performance parts for builds that call for them. We do not fit low cost knock-offs to save a few dollars on a job this size.
