"This place worked wonders when my normal shop said my car was basically dead. Another rebuild shop said it would be 6 months. Other shops said they couldn't take my car. East Valley Auto Rebuild rebuilt my engine and fixed my alternator in less than 2 weeks."

"If you have a Subaru and need work done this is the place to go. My Subaru has over 300,000 miles and East Valley Auto Rebuild is the only place I take it."

Seattle runs on Subarus. Drive through Ballard or West Seattle on a wet Tuesday and count the Outbacks. So the real question for a Seattle owner is not where to find a shop that will work on one. It is where to find a shop that only works on them.

That is us. We are a Subaru specialty shop in Kent, about twenty minutes south of downtown Seattle, and Subarus are nearly all we see. We have been at it for over 30 years, family-owned and locally owned, and BBB A+ Accredited.

We are not located in Seattle. We say that plainly because customers should know what they are driving to. Our building, our machine shop and our technicians are all in Kent, and a large share of the cars in our shop on any given day came down from the Seattle area to get there.

Subaru Engine Rebuilds

This is the work the shop was built around. A Subaru engine rebuild here means a full teardown, cleaning and inspection of every component, machining where it is needed, and reassembly to the spec the build calls for. Factory restoration for a daily driver. Upgraded internals for a high-performance build. Both come through the same doors.

We document the work as it happens and send photos and/or videos so you can see the inside of your own engine rather than taking our word for the invoice.

Why does that matter more on a rebuild than on any other job?

Because a rebuild is the one repair where you cannot inspect the result. The engine goes back together and everything you are buying disappears inside it. Showing the work is the only honest answer to that.

Our In-House Machine Shop

Most shops that offer a rebuild send the machine work out. We do not. Our Subaru machine shop sits in the same building, with precision lathes, mills, hones, measuring tools and a clean room.

That covers:

We handle most of this work in house, which is the reason a rebuild for a Seattle customer does not sit in a queue at a third shop across town waiting for a mill to open up. It also means one set of hands is accountable for the tolerances from start to finish.

Head Gaskets and Engine Resealing

Every Subaru owner has heard the phrase, usually with a wince attached. Head gasket replacement and full engine resealing are routine work for us, not a specialty job we take on reluctantly.

The part Seattle drivers should know: a head gasket job is the moment to look at everything else that is due. The engine is already open. Timing components, water pump, seals and the cooling system are all right there. We tell you what is worth doing now and what genuinely can wait, because a second teardown in two years costs far more than the parts would have.

Climate plays into this more than people expect. Cars around Puget Sound rarely see the temperature extremes that kill engines elsewhere, so a Subaru here often reaches 200,000 miles with a strong bottom end and tired gaskets. That combination is the argument for resealing rather than replacing. The expensive part of your engine is usually still good.

We also see the opposite case, where a car has been run hot once too often and the heads have moved. According to Subaru's service specifications, a cylinder head that falls outside the flatness tolerance has to be resurfaced or replaced rather than reused with a new gasket. We measure every head on our own equipment before it goes back on, which is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that gets you through a summer.

Transmissions, Drivetrain and Everyday Service

Not every Seattle Subaru that comes down the 5 needs an engine. Most of them need what any car needs, done by someone who knows the platform.

Our team also works on most other makes and models. Subaru is the specialty, not the limit.

Why Seattle Drivers Make the Trip to Kent

A twenty minute drive is a real cost, and we would rather be straight about why people make it.

Depth on one platform. A general shop sees a Subaru head gasket now and then. We see them constantly, and that difference shows up in the diagnosis long before it shows up on the invoice.

Machining and installation under one roof. Very few shops in Washington can machine your block and install the finished engine in the same building. We can, and it removes the seam where most rebuilds go wrong.

High-mileage experience. A lot of Seattle Subarus are past 200,000 miles and still earning their keep. In our experience these cars are usually worth fixing, and we will tell you honestly when one is not.

Straight answers. We tell customers what needs attention now and what can wait. Nobody here works on commission to sell you a service you do not need.

So is the drive down from Seattle worth it for an oil change?

Probably not, and we will not pretend otherwise. For a rebuild, a head gasket, a transmission or a diagnosis three other shops have missed, it is exactly the kind of work this shop was built for.

FAQ: Subaru Repair near Seattle

Do you have a shop in Seattle?

No. Our only location is in Kent, WA, about twenty minutes south of downtown Seattle. Plenty of our customers drive down from the Seattle area for work they cannot get done as well closer to home.

How long does a Subaru engine rebuild take?

It depends on the build and on parts availability. A straightforward factory-spec rebuild moves faster than a custom high-performance build. We give you a realistic window when we quote and keep you updated with photos and/or videos as the work goes on.

Can you rebuild an engine I remove myself?

Yes. We regularly work on engines that customers bring in on a stand, and we will happily hand a finished engine back for you to install. Plenty of our customers do their own installation work.

Do you work on older Subarus?

We do, including models going back to the 1980s. Older Subarus are some of our favorite work, and our machine shop is often the reason a part nobody sells any more can be saved.

Will you tell me if my Subaru is not worth repairing?

Yes. We give honest appraisals, including the ones that end with us not getting the job. A rebuild on a car with a failing body or transmission is not a good use of your money and we will say so.

Do you work on other makes and models?

Yes. Subarus are our specialty, but our team works on most makes and models.
